Lucinda Dilworth is an up-and-coming artist who seamlessly integrates AI and projection mapping with both digital and physical paintings. With roots in Greece and England, her heritage and artistic family profoundly influence her work. “The environment and the support of my family and friends have been crucial in fueling my creativity,” she shares. Embracing cutting-edge technology, Lucinda is forging a new path in her family's creative legacy.

Artistic Journey and Perspective on AI

Lucinda’s journey into the art world was unconventional. A recent graduate from the University of Colorado, Boulder, she initially studied business entrepreneurship. However, the COVID-19 pandemic shifted her focus. Self-taught through YouTube, she discovered a passion for frame-by-frame animation in Procreate, which led her to explore projection mapping, augmented reality, and AI.

When asked about the fear surrounding AI in the art world, Lucinda acknowledges the controversy. “AI can be seen as detrimental because it might overshadow natural creativity, but it also offers incredible opportunities to enhance and create new works,” she says. For traditional artists, AI provides a platform to experiment and break conventional boundaries more easily than mastering complex tools like Unreal Engine. Lucinda uses AI creatively, starting with sketches and seeing what tools like Kaiber generate, then evolving those ideas into unique versions. “Understanding and utilizing AI is crucial because it is here to stay.”

"Artificial Impressions"

Lucinda's latest collection, "Artificial Impressions," showcases her technical prowess and innovative use of AI. Inspired by George Orwell’s 1984, the collection delves into themes of surveillance, control, and the manipulation of reality. Each piece is animated, making the art dynamic and engaging.

To bring her vision to life, Lucinda employed six Optoma HD29HST projectors, controlled by the Datapath FX4, to cover a 3m high wall. This setup allowed her to create seamless displays despite challenges like pixelation and visual blending. The Datapath FX4 was crucial in managing the technical complexities, ensuring a flawless presentation.

AI Integration and Workflow

Lucinda's "Artificial Impressions” exhibition, sponsored by Kaiber, incorporated AI into her work, using prompts like "psychedelic glitch" and "chromatic aberration." The sponsored collaboration highlighted the transformative potential of AI in the creative process, allowing Lucinda to push the boundaries of digital art.

Lucinda’s workflow involves a blend of digital and physical techniques. She starts by creating sketches in Procreate, then transfers and refines them, sometimes painting real-life versions. She animates these images frame by frame in Procreate Dreams, applying effects in After Effects for a psychedelic touch. Her preference for chromatic aberration and trippy visuals is evident in her style. Lucinda uses tools like VDMX and MadMapper for projection mapping. She continues to innovate, using platforms like Kaiber and ChatGPT to generate and refine prompts for her AI-driven creations.

Future Plans

The success of "Artificial Impressions" has inspired Lucinda to plan future exhibitions in new locations. She continues to push the boundaries of art and technology, exploring the dynamic relationship between the two.

In terms of her workflow, Lucinda wishes for tools that can expedite intricate animations, such as drawing blinking eyes or walking figures, which currently demand significant time and effort. Looking ahead, she is excited about creating larger-scale works, such as murals, and investing in higher-quality projectors to enhance her immersive art experiences.

By integrating AI into her artistic process, Lucinda not only enhances her creative output but also demonstrates the potential for traditional artists to evolve and thrive in a technology-driven world.
